Between Heaven and Earth

And so, it begins.

Along with just about everyone else on the planet I have decided to start a blog. I am not sure I have anything valuable or interesting to say. That's going to be up to you, the reader, to decide.

It will not be a cerebral blog. If you are looking for that you will want to read Guy Tal's blog. He's so cerebral he makes my brain hurt.

As you can see, it will have attempts at humor from time to time. Although, if you want humor, and often irreverent, then you will want to check out Ian Plant's blog. I highly recommend both for photographers looking for different examples of an artist's approach to his work.

My approach to the work is guided not as much intellectually but more emotionally. My response to a scene is usually a visceral one.

Vocabulary.com defines it like this:

"When something's visceral, you feel it in your guts. A visceral feeling is intuitive — there might not be a rational explanation, but you feel that you know what's best, like your visceral reaction against egg salad."

and Mirriam-Webster Online gives the definition as this:

"adjective ˈvi-sə-rəl, ˈvis-rəl. : coming from strong emotions and not from logic or
reason."

One could say it's the Leroy Jethro Gibbs approach to photography.

Now, before you go jumping to conclusions, there is a thought process to my work. It just isn't usually a thought that prompts me to set up the gear for a shot, but an emotional response to something in the scene. My main responder to shooting a scene is color, but light is a close second. Of course, other elements like line, form, or even texture can jump in at just about any time. After the response is triggered, the analysis of the scene begins and then guides what the composition, exposure, shutter speed, iso, and lens will be used to best convey what's before me.

There will be no gear reviews in this blog. No revenue stream to support that!

Nor will there be a lot of tech talk as I know just enough to trip the shutter and process the image in Photoshop. What I do know has mostly come from others who share their knowledge freely or for profit.

I will share, from time to time, inspiration I have received from other sources or artists.

It won't be a daily blog, but I will write when I think I have something that might be worth sharing.

What this blog will be about is that opening of ourselves to what is offered every time we venture into nature. To letting go of the things in our lives that drag us down, and embracing those things that lift us to a higher place. I hope you will join me along the way.

"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls."-Pablo Picasso
